Medical review
This tool has not yet been reviewed by a licensed clinician. It only restates published criteria with their sources; see our medical review policy.
How it works
Your BMI is weight divided by height squared (in US units: 703 × pounds ÷ inches²). The result is compared with three published sets of criteria:
- Surgery — ASMBS/IFSO 2022: recommended from BMI 35 regardless of conditions; should be considered from 30 to 34.9 with metabolic disease (we count type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and fatty liver); for Asian ancestry, offered from 27.5.
- Prescription medication — FDA labeling as summarized by NIDDK: adults with BMI 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.
- Medicare GLP-1 Bridge — Medicare.gov criteria, simplified: BMI 35 or more, or lower thresholds with specific conditions; people with type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea or fatty liver are covered through their Part D plan instead. The quiz only flags whether to ask your doctor about it.
Example you can check
5 ft 7 in (67 in) and 210 lb: 703 × 210 ÷ 67² = 32.9. That is obesity class 1 (CDC). Surgery: «consider» only with a metabolic condition. Medication: meets the BMI criterion.
Limits
- BMI does not measure body fat directly and does not apply the same way to everyone.
- Criteria change; insurers often use stricter ones.
- The quiz cannot account for your full medical history. A clinician decides.
Privacy
The quiz has no form submission and no network request with your data. Our analytics (only if you accepted cookies) records that the quiz was started and completed and the type of service suggested — never your height, weight, BMI or answers. Session recording, if you accepted it, masks this whole tool.
