Telehealth vs in-clinic weight loss: how to compare

a neutral comparison table and the red flags

Sources checked Nov 2, 2026Choosing

Short answer

Telehealth programs are convenient for follow-ups but cannot do a physical exam or labs on their own. In-clinic care adds exams, body measurements and local follow-up. Many local clinics offer both. Whatever you choose, confirm who the clinician is, where they are licensed and which medication product you would receive.

Ask about licensing in your state

Ask the program which clinician will see you and whether that clinician is licensed in the state where you are located during the visit. You can then check that license with your state's licensing board.

Red flags

  • A prescription without any medical history, evaluation or follow-up.
  • No clear price until after you pay a deposit.
  • Vague answers about which product you would receive. The FDA states that compounded drugs are not FDA-approved and are not reviewed for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are marketed.
  • Promises of a specific amount of weight in a specific time.

Frequently asked questions

Is online weight loss medication legit?

Programs differ. Check the clinician's license, ask for the product name and pharmacy, and avoid any program that prescribes without an evaluation.

Can telehealth programs use my insurance?

Some do. Ask whether they bill your plan for visits and whether the medication goes through your pharmacy benefit.
